Drbákov – Albertovy skály

The nature trail, with its many interesting sights, offers numerous views of the valley as a well-deserved reward for conquering the rugged terrain. The route includes 11 stations that present the history.

A walk on the Drbákov – Albertovy skály nature trail transports you to a true viewpoint paradise. The view of the Slapy Dam, the craggy cliffs, and the dense forests are breathtaking.

A complex of scree forests and flowering groves lies hidden in the area surrounding the Slapy Dam. The Drbákov – Albertovy skály nature reserve is situated on a hilltop with a unique diversity of ecosystems. On the right bank of the Vltava River, opposite the resort town of Smilovice, a nature trail winds its way between steep cliffs and sunny slopes. The nearly 8 km long hike is particularly suitable for those who enjoy hiking at higher elevations.

  • Interesting fact: Can you imagine that before the construction of the Slapy Dam, the Vltava’s riverbed was several metres lower than it is today?

The nature trail begins at the U Křížku parking area near Nalžovické Podhájí. There you will find the first information panel, and you will pass ten more along the way. Thanks to them, you will learn more about the local flora and fauna. Among the rarities are the common spotted orchid, the spring primrose, and the critically endangered red yew,  which the protected landscape area was formerly named after. Rare animals such as the green lizard and the spotted salamander bask on the slopes. Steep rock faces, enormous trees, and cliffs form an impressive backdrop for the hike. Rock faces and pillars reach heights of up to 150 metres in some places.

  • Tip for you: The Czech Nature and Landscape Protection Agency recommends that visitors exercise extreme caution. Fallen trees can block the path, and rocky sections can be very slippery when wet. Therefore, non-slip hiking boots are essential.

On the path along the steep cliffs, you’ll have to overcome considerable changes in altitude, climb stairs, rock ledges, or hold onto fixed chains here and there. In some places, you’ll have to squeeze through narrow passages. However, you will reap a sweet reward in the form of unique viewpoints that appear one after another. Those who reach the viewpoints Albertova vyhlídka, Bílá skála, or Bartůňkova vyhlídka will have the winding Vltava River and its beautiful surroundings spread out right before them.

What’s next?

From the nature trail, you can turn onto the yellow trail and walk to the beach in Častoboř. The grassy and sandy banks of the Vltava River offer ideal conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and various water activities. At the Andělská laguna campsite, you can rent paddleboards and boats. The Oboz area is a great place for relaxation and fun by the water, which, in addition to activities, also offers views of the river, rocks and forests. History enthusiasts can take a trip to the nearby baroque Radíč Chateau.

Did you know?

The area became a protected site in 1933 under the name Drbákovské Tisy. In 1977, protection was extended to the neighboring Albertovy Skály. It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most beautiful places in the central Povltaví region.
