Nelahozeves Castle

Behind the castle walls, inspired by northern Italian estates, explore the history of the Lobkowicz family, visit the museum, or enjoy cultural events. You can even stay overnight in this fairy-tale setting.

Nelahozeves Castle stands as a stunning example of Renaissance architecture, perched above the peaceful Vltava River. Step into the world of the Lobkowicz family and be enchanted by the exquisite interiors and remarkable collections. The atmosphere here is truly inspiring, especially considering its proximity to the birthplace of the musical genius, Antonín Dvořák.

Built in the mid-16th century by nobleman Florian Griespek of Griespach, the castle reflects a northern Italian style, symbolizing his noble status. After financial troubles, the castle was sold to the Lobkowicz family in 1623, where it has remained ever since. Despite turbulent times, including looting during the Thirty Years’ War and confiscation by the Communist government in 1948, the Lobkowicz family reclaimed it in 1993 through restitution.

Today, the castle is open to the public, housing an impressive array of art, including works by world-renowned artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Diego Velázquez, and Lucas Cranach the Elder. You’ll also find rare musical instruments, musical scores, tapestries, and period porcelain among the collection.

  • Interesting fact: Since 2008, the castle has featured an exhibition called A Glimpse into Aristocratic Interiors, offering a detailed look at the lifestyle of 19th-century noble families. The opening of the exhibit was attended by President Václav Havel.

The castle hosts a variety of programs year-round, including guided tours and themed events such as festivals and concerts. School groups can enjoy educational tours where they can try their hand at curating or explore aristocratic treasures. You can also book a private tour for a truly unique experience.

  • Tip for you: After your visit, take your time to relax at the castle grounds, which feature a playground and the Skála café, perfect for enjoying a drink in the shade of tall trees with a picturesque view of the castle. You can also stay overnight or charge your e-bike at the charging station.

Your cultural adventure doesn’t end here. The Lobkowicz family also manages the nearby birthplace of Antonín Dvořák. Afterward, unwind at the neighboring info center and café, offering lovely views of the passing trains and St. Andrew’s Church. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike the 12-kilometer trail along the Vltava River, following in the footsteps of Dvořák from Nelahozeves to Veltrusy.
