The Orlík reservoir is the largest dam in our country in terms of retained water. It will interest enthusiasts of purpose-built architecture, and lovers of beach relaxation and water sports will be in their element here.
A massive link in the chain of Vltava dams bears the name of the castle that once towered above the deep valley of the Vltava River. Today, its walls rise only a few metres above the surface of the dam lake.
The Orlík reservoir, also known as the Orlík Dam, is an important part of the Vltava Cascade. It serves to regulate the flow of the river for the needs of electricity production and as protection against flood danger. Together with the Lipno Dam, the Orlík is a crucial link for multi-year flow management on the Vltava and lower Elbe.
The Orlík hydroelectric power plant is located in the left part of the river at the foot of the concrete dam. It plays a significant role in controlling the national electric power system, especially thanks to four fully automated sets of Kaplan turbines, through which all the water flows. One of the wheels was a world rarity at the time of its commissioning, and was even awarded a gold medal at the EXPO 58 World Exhibition in Brussels.
The Orlík Dam is a popular recreational spot. Its dark surface attracts tourists to take a boat, rowboat or pedal boat ride. You can try surfing and other water activities here. In several places you will find banks covered with fine sand, which are perfect for sunbathing and a relaxing summer day by the water. Fishermen and lovers of remote places will also find their peaceful oases on the banks of the dam.
You can also explore the surface during a ride operated by Orlík boat transport. Its excursion boats will take you to explore the royal castle of Zvíkov or to the Orlík Château, which has been towering on the rock like an eagle’s nest since the 13th century. You can also take a sightseeing cruise with dinner and musical accompaniment. If you are a fan of hiking, then go on a 24km long walk between Kamýk and Orlík
