Although it's only occasionally open to the public, tourist trails pass by, allowing you to experience its majesty on a walk or as a guest at a cultural event.
Enjoy a walk through the Posázaví region leading to the ruins of the Gothic Pirkštejn Castle. Gamers may recognize the silhouette of Rataje nad Sázavou from Kingdom Come: Deliverance, where it serves as a key location.
Founded in the 14th century by Jindřich of Lipá, Pirkštejn was initially part of the town’s fortifications. It suffered a fire in the 15th century but was later restored and used mainly as a residence. Over the years, it housed noble families, including Viktorín of Poděbrady, son of King George of Poděbrady.
By the 16th century, the castle lost its significance when a new owner, Ladislav Malešický, shifted focus to the nearby chateau. After being damaged in a peasant uprising (1627), Pirkštejn fell into neglect. In the early 18th century, it was converted into a parish house, with its tower turned into a bell tower.
Embark on a walking tour along the Medieval Trails of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, inspired by the iconic game from Warhorse Studios. Explore key locations and see how they’ve transformed from medieval times to the present day. History buffs will also want to take in the nearby Český Šternberk Castle, an impressive Gothic structure with a stunning Baroque interior, just 11 km away.
