PLA Kokořín Region and Mácha’s Region
The romance of rocks, forests and ponds creates a landscape that is not difficult to fall in love with. The writer Karel Hynek Mácha also fell in love with the poetic environment.
In the Kokořín Region, the hustle and bustle of cities and everyday worries will not catch up with you. The area, which hides rock towns and mysterious castles, is the right destination for romantic dreamers and adventurers.
When the sun rises in the Kokořín Region, sandstone rocks emerge from the darkness. The area, interwoven with deep forests and wetlands, is home to a wide range of plant and animal species. Various sandstone formations such as Frog or Boar are also reminiscent of the animal kingdom. The Kokořín Plate Covers (Kokořínské pokličky), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the rock formation called the Giant Head became the symbols of the area. Among the most famous admirers was Karel Hynek Mácha, whose name is also reflected in the name of the protected landscape area Kokořín Region – Mácha Region.
The uniqueness of the region is not only reflected in the charm of nature, but also stands out from a cultural point of view. Especially thanks to the preserved folk architecture, which is uniquely connected to the landscape. Every romantic will also be captivated by the view of the Harasov resort, whose water reflects the surrounding rocks. In the summer, you can enjoy great swimming here, and a pleasant walk all year round. You can walk to the torso of Harasov Castle, which was nicknamed Krvomlýn, or go to the Ladčin pramen spring for a sip of spring water.
The dominant feature of the area, which rises above the Kokořínský důl mine like a fairy-tale apparition, is Kokořín Castle. Thanks to sensitive care, the previously forgotten ruin has been transformed into a magical place that offers a glimpse into the history of knighthood. After visiting this place, follow the trail Cinibulkova stezka, which will take you through the forest, a stone labyrinth and discoveries. The walk is lined with stops with information panels full of interesting facts about history and nature.
- Tip for you: On hot summer days, a break for refreshment will come in handy. You can enjoy this at the Mšené Municipal Spa, which is the start and finish of the educational trail named after Josef Cinibulka. You can bathe here in the clear water from a rock spring and at the same time admire the art deco style of the First Republic.
What’s next?
From the Kokořín Region, head towards the wine-rich embrace of Mělník. In addition to the intoxicating drink from the local sunny vineyards, you can enjoy the view of the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers, and you can also visit the Regional Museum in the premises of the former Capuchin monastery. Day trippers of all ages will also be pleased with a stop at the Zelčín Zoopark .
Interesting fact:
Did you know that robber bandits once hid in the Mordloch Cave? Where visitors today can enjoy a moment of rest and a view of the nearby rock formation known as the Seven Loaves, legend has it that a band of outcasts once lived. They ambushed travellers and merchants along a nearby trade route. The credibility of the legend is reinforced by the fact that in 1720, Count Jan Vratislav Clary and several of his subjects were murdered in this very area.
