The massive torso of the windmill stands in a clearing near Sedlčany. Although its best years are behind it, its extraordinary appearance still attracts attention.
The ruin of the Příčovy mill looks more like the remains of a Scottish castle or a medieval fortress. The perimeter of the building is an incredible 44 metres, with the width of the stone walls reaching up to 1.5 metres in certain places. These dimensions make the mill the most massive building of its kind in Europe! Many uncertainties also contribute to its magical atmosphere. For example, there are still discussions to this day about when it was built and what it looked like.
The Czech Kingdom is ruled by Rudolf II and Shakespeare is finishing his greatest dramas in England. From the same period, there are the first mentions of a mill near Vysoký Chlumec. We can also learn that this mill was no longer functioning and was falling into disrepair in the second half of the 18th century. No period sketches, no original equipment, only massive perimeter masonry, from which it can be deduced that the mill was truly of above-standard dimensions.
You can find other historical buildings, including a water sawmill and a mill, in the Vysoký Chlumec open-air museum. For a beautiful view of the Slapy Dam, drive a few kilometres north, to the Albertovy skály rocks. You can observe the starry sky during a visit to the Josef Sadil Folk Observatory in Sedlčany. If you like castles, be sure to stop by in Vrchotovy Janovice.
