Příhrazské skály

The wild rock town hidden in the arms of the Bohemian Paradise attracts adventurers, climbers and participants in family trips. An expedition to rock castles and the tranquillity of nature crowned with magnificent views

Weaving through a mysterious labyrinth of sandstone towers and hidden gorges turns hikers’ steps into a true adventure in nature.

The Příhrazské skály nature reserve adorns the landscape east of the Mužský monument reserve. The sandstone rock city stretches from the village of Příhrazy to the hamlet of Dneboh. The rock complex consists of 170 sandstone towers, over which the tallest, nicknamed Kobylí hlava (Mare’s Head), watches.  The area is full of ruins reminiscent of the glory of rock castles in the 13th century, and the most beautiful monuments in the area include the ruins of Valečov Castle.

  • Interesting fact: Not far from Kobylí hlava (Mare’s Head) is the torso of Hynšta Castle, which was built on the rocks in the early 13th century. Only one room with a central column has been preserved to this day. In the central part, there is a chapel carved into the rock, where members of the Unity of the Brethren hid from their pursuers.

The children’s educational trail through the Příhrazské skály will take you on a 9 km long circuit, during which children will playfully get to know the local nature, while the rugged terrain will become an entertaining addition to the walk. However, you can choose from several other routes. On the northern and western sides of the rocks, a marked trail leads along the top of a high cliff. The narrow rocky cleft Studený průchod (Cold Passage) is one of the most interesting places in the area.

The red tourist trail will lead you to another rock castle, Drábské světničky, where construction work is currently underway within the inner circuit. However, it is still possible to walk through the area. The chambers hollowed out by the elements and the ravages of time into the rock blocks are connected by staircases, and at the peaks you are then rewarded with a sweet reward in the form of circular views to the distant surroundings.

What’s next?

If you get hungry during the trip and have no snacks in your backpacks, head to the Na krásné vyhlídce restaurant. Not only will you find your way there, but you can also plan your next steps with the captivating view of the region.  How about a stop in Mnichovo Hradiště, the gateway to Bohemian Paradise? The local château celebrates the pinnacle of Baroque architecture with its preserved appearance; in the museum, you can see, among other things, a plaster model of the Drábské světničky.

Tip for you:

The trails winding through the Příhrazské skály often run along the edges of steep rock formations, where extra caution is required. For this reason, bringing a stroller is not recommended. However, families with school-aged children or those equipped with baby carriers will certainly enjoy the trip.
