The road to Okoř is like no other. Just follow the Zákolanský stream to one of Central Bohemia’s most beloved castle ruins, where the historic setting hosts medieval festivals, theatrical performances, and even duels.
Okoř is a beloved destination for both tourists and cyclists, offering a backdrop for sword-fighting performances and historical battles. In the summer, the area around the castle often comes to life with the sounds of festivals and live music concerts.
The foundation of Okoř Castle was laid at the end of the 13th century, with its construction continuing for two more centuries. However, during the Thirty Years’ War, the castle suffered devastating damage and gradually fell into ruin. Today, only the remnants of its Gothic walls, palaces, and chapel remain. Despite this, the castle still stands as a striking feature in the surrounding landscape, its entire area exuding a unique charm.
During your visit, explore the early Gothic chapel ruins, the tower remnants, the first gate, and the older upper castle. The late Gothic fortifications highlight efforts to defend against threats, particularly from the eastern slope. A forward bastion offers a great view of the rampart and moats.
Your trip doesn’t have to end at the ruins—explore the charming village below the castle. Take a peaceful walk along the Zákolanský stream, passing the well-known Colorado cottage settlement. You can also relax at one of Okoř’s cozy spots. Treat yourself to something sweet at Pod hradem pastry shop, or enjoy a meal and drink at Bistro Okoř. For some extra fun, head to nearby Číčovice for adventure golf, or make your way to Úholičky, just 6 km away, to try out the giant swing—everyone in the family will want to stay!
