Ruins of Okoř Castle

The road to Okoř is like no other. Just follow the Zákolanský stream to one of Central Bohemia’s most beloved castle ruins, where the historic setting hosts medieval festivals, theatrical performances, and even duels.

Okoř is a beloved destination for both tourists and cyclists, offering a backdrop for sword-fighting performances and historical battles. In the summer, the area around the castle often comes to life with the sounds of festivals and live music concerts.

The foundation of Okoř Castle was laid at the end of the 13th century, with its construction continuing for two more centuries. However, during the Thirty Years’ War, the castle suffered devastating damage and gradually fell into ruin. Today, only the remnants of its Gothic walls, palaces, and chapel remain. Despite this, the castle still stands as a striking feature in the surrounding landscape, its entire area exuding a unique charm.

  • Interesting fact: Like many historic sites, Okoř is shrouded in secrets and legends. The most well-known tale is that of the White Lady, the ghost of the late lady of the castle, who wanders the ruins, guarding a treasure hidden deep beneath the ground. The mystery still draws curious adventurers, but so far, no one has managed to solve the legend or uncover the hidden treasure.

During your visit, explore the early Gothic chapel ruins, the tower remnants, the first gate, and the older upper castle. The late Gothic fortifications highlight efforts to defend against threats, particularly from the eastern slope. A forward bastion offers a great view of the rampart and moats.

  • Tip for you: Okoř is just 25 km northwest of Prague, easily accessible by car or public transport. If you prefer walking or cycling, you’ll enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding the castle. The grassy area beneath the ruins is perfect for a relaxing picnic.
