Vrchotovy Janovice Château

The neo-Gothic water fortress in Vrchotovy Janovice is surrounded by a landscape park and an educational trail with views of the Blaník Knights' land.

Vrchotovy Janovice château, surrounded by water moats and a charming landscape park, lies at the heart of the village. The tranquil area, bordered by forests, also features an educational trail that starts in nearby Olbramovice and leads to the château gate.

The château has undergone numerous reconstructions throughout its history. Originally built as a Gothic fortress in the 14th century, its exterior and interior were gradually altered to reflect the architectural styles of the time. It saw Renaissance renovations in the 16th century, followed by Baroque and Rococo changes in the 18th century. The château took its final form, as we know it today, about 200 years ago.

  • Interesting fact: The last noble owner of the château was Baroness Sidónie Nádherná, a patroness who greatly influenced the beauty of the surrounding park. The garden was her passion, and she worked on it for many years with her brother. During her time at the château , she hosted famous figures like architect Adolf Loos, the renowned German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and landscape architect Camillo Schneider, who significantly shaped the park’s design. It’s no surprise that the educational trail is named after Baroness Sidónie Nádherná.

Although not a large château, it offers three unique exhibitions. One highlights Czech bell-making, the only exhibition of its kind in the country, showcasing over 150 bells from the National Museum’s collection, along with the history of the craft, complemented by bell sounds and period music. There’s also an exhibition dedicated to prominent literary figures who visited the château, as well as a display on 19th-century Czech aristocracy, featuring period clothing and interior furnishings.

For hiking enthusiasts, climbing nearby Blaník Mountain is a must.
