The Enigmatic Land of the Blaník Knights

25. 11. 2025

Few places in Central Bohemia feel as mysterious as the land said to shelter the mythical Blaník army. Here, echoes of the past mingle with centuries-old tales, creating an atmosphere that attracts travellers, hikers, and dreamers from near and far. Add to that the rolling countryside, quiet forests, and a sense of timelessness—and you’ve arrived in the Land of the Blaník Knights.

High on the slopes of Mount Blaník, hidden deep beneath the earth, sleeps a legendary army known as the Blaník Knights. According to an old Czech legend, they will rise to protect the nation in its darkest hour. The mystical hill lies in Central Bohemia, where folklore, history, and nature blend into one unforgettable landscape.

Vlašim – the Heart of the Area

At the centre of this enchanting landscape lies Vlašim, a town whose charm is defined by history, romantic scenery, and a calm, laid-back rhythm. The town’s dominant landmark, the Renaissance-rebuilt Vlašim Castle, welcomes visitors with the exhibitions of the Museum of the Podblanicko Region. Discover noble family coats of arms, historical weapons, and curious stories from the area’s past.

Just outside the castle walls stretches one of the most picturesque parks in Central Bohemia. This English-style landscape park invites you for a slow, atmospheric walk among the elegant Chinese Pavilion, several neo-Gothic gates, and the mysterious Old Castle hidden among the trees. The Blanice River winds through the park, giving the place a fairy-tale feel and changing its mood with every season.

Vlašim offers far more than its castle. Among its noteworthy sites are the Church of St. Giles, dating back to 1303, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1723, and the Hussite Church tower, home to the town’s oldest bell, cast in 1438.

For a more contemporary contrast, spot the illuminated Dandelion Fountain, especially striking after sunset.
A unique curiosity is the solitary Auersperg Tomb, today quietly surrounded by socialist-era apartment buildings—an unexpected blend of centuries.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss ParaZOO, a small but meaningful rescue zoo unlike the usual zoological gardens. Instead of exotic animals, it provides a safe home for injured or handicapped native species that cannot return to the wild. A stroll through ParaZOO is not only enjoyable but also educational: children learn how to protect nature and what to do if they ever encounter an injured animal.

Zruč nad Sázavou and it’s surroundings

As you explore the Land of the Blaník Knights, don’t miss the castle in Zruč nad Sázavou, perched above the Sázava River. This neo-Gothic landmark, wrapped in a beautiful English park, invites you to uncover its secrets on a tour or while relaxing in the café. For families, it’s a true paradise: the former lookout tower comes alive through an interactive game, and the World of Bricks and Dolls in the attic brings children into a playful, dreamy world.

The castle park is home to Knight Milota of Kolowrat’s educational trail, where kids can try archery, axe throwing, or even medieval-style fishing. Afterwards, head to the neighbouring traffic and children’s playground, dominated by a thrilling marble run full of bridges, ramps, and tunnels.

If you’re still in the mood for exploring, visit the Water House just 8 km away for hands-on fun about the world of water, or the Bee World centre to dive into the fascinating life of bees.

Planning a summer trip? Combine your visit with a canoe or rafting adventure—equipment rentals are available nearby, and the pier below the castle is the perfect starting point.

Where to head next?

The Land of the Blaník Knights isn’t only about legends and history—it’s a region where you can unwind in places that still feel wonderfully undiscovered. One of them is Vrchotovy Janovice Château, encircled by water-filled moats and a picturesque landscape park. Inside, you’ll find a unique exhibition on Czech bell-making as well as a display dedicated to the literary figures who once visited the château. Another highlight is the exhibition Society in 19th-Century Bohemia, offering a glimpse into aristocratic life through period clothing and historically furnished interiors.

Athletes and runners will find a unique challenge in Jankov. In 1645, a fierce battle between Swedish forces and the Imperial army raged near the village of Jankov. Today, the battlefield is quiet, marked only by memorials and small sacred monuments—yet a new kind of contest awaits. You can take on your own personal battle with nearly thirty kilometres of thoughtfully planned running trails. These restored field paths, often lined with old tree alleys, lead past the Jankov ponds and offer sweeping views of the rolling countryside and both iconic Blaník hills.

The twin peaks of Velký and Malý Blaník are the spiritual heart of the region, wrapped in legend and peaceful forest trails. A hike to Velký Blaník rewards you with a wooden lookout tower perched at the summit, offering panoramic views of rolling hills, meadows, and the surrounding countryside. At the foot of the mountain, the Blaník Nature House introduces visitors to the area’s mythology, wildlife, and landscape through interactive exhibitions—making it an ideal stop before or after your hike.

Just a short drive away lies Votice, a town full of quiet charm and surprising discoveries. Families will love the Butterfly House, where colourful tropical species flutter freely around visitors. The town’s historical spirit can be felt at the Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi, while the Václavka Tower offers elevated views across Votice’s rooftops. For a closer look at the local landscape, head to the Votice Stone Lookout, a peaceful spot ideal for photography or a moment of reflection.

Adventure seekers will feel right at home at Ranch Jestřebice, where you can try horseback riding, cycling or quad biking, archery, paintball, and plenty of other outdoor activities. And just a short distance away, Monínec Ski Resort awaits all winter sports enthusiasts—offering snowy fun for skiers, snowboarders, and families looking for a day in the mountains.
