Between Prague and South Bohemia stretches Toulava, a region loved by romantics, adventurers, hikers, cyclists, and families alike. It’s a destination made for those who want to step away from the rush of city life for a while.
Rolling hills, deep forests, ponds and rivers, charming villages and historic landmarks – all combine into a landscape that calms, inspires, and invites you to wander. It’s an idyllic place for city escapes, yet magical in every season.
Sedlčany – the Beating Heart of Toulava
At the centre of the Central Bohemian part of Toulava lies Sedlčany – a modest town at first glance, but one that pleasantly surprises every visitor. Its beautiful square is framed by the former Economic Savings Bank building and the Old Town Hall, home to the Municipal Museum. Here you will find the Suk Hall, dedicated to the famous violinist Josef Suk, born in nearby Křečovice.
Sedlčany is also the starting point for the playful regional game TouLOVEkarta. Visitors collect cards of magical creatures at more than 50 locations across Toulava. After gathering three cards, players receive a set of 20 collectible playing cards and can challenge friends or family in their own fantasy duel.
A Paradise for Hikers & Cyclists
Just a few kilometres from Sedlčany, the landscape unfolds into a mosaic of hills, ponds, forests, meadows, and sweeping views.
The green hiking trail to Příčovy leads to the mysterious ruins of the largest windmill ever built in Czech lands. The stone torso of the Příčovy windmill resembles the remains of a Scottish tower or medieval fortress, surrounded by legends and unanswered questions – no one knows exactly when it was built or what it looked like in its prime.
For truly breathtaking views, follow the Drbákov – Albertovy skály educational trail. Towering cliffs, deep ravines, dense forests and views over the Slapy Reservoir create one of the most dramatic landscapes in the region. The nearly 8-km loop is a dream for lovers of alpine-style terrain.
Winter sports fans shouldn’t miss Monínec, a ski area that can make snow even at 15°C thanks to special technology. Slopes are open daily in winter, including a 1.2 km illuminated piste for night skiing. But Monínec is not just a winter destination – it offers year-round fun: alpine coaster, giant slide, marble track, rope park and many other activities ideal for families.
You can also reach Monínec from Sedlčany via the Krčínova Cycle Route, following the peaceful Sedlecký stream. Halfway along the route stands the charming Strnadovský Mill – a beautifully restored farmhouse with a self-service drink machine right on the trail. Continue to Sedlec-Prčice, famous for the legendary Prague-Prčice long-distance march. On the square stands the Monument of the Prčice Shoe, and nearby you can visit the Vítek of Prčice Brewery and the Museum of the Vítkovci Family.
The Gingerbread Adventure in Počepice
Just outside Počepice you’ll find a place straight out of a fairy tale: the Perníčkovna Gingerbread Cottage. Follow a mysterious forest path, climb onto the rooftop of the little house to claim your gingerbread treat, and keep an eye out—you might even meet a friendly forest witch. Don’t worry, this one is kind and always has plenty of gingerbread for everyone. It’s a charming stop for families and anyone who loves a touch of magic in their travels.
Open-air Museum, Castles & Water Adventures
A favourite stop in Toulava is the Vysoký Chlumec Open-Air Museum, featuring historic rural homes, barns, craft workshops and chapels – all showcasing village life from the 17th to early 20th century. Seasonal events bring traditions to life, from Easter and Christmas to Craft Days.
Castle-lovers can visit Osečany Château, open on summer Sundays. The tour includes the 17th-century interiors and the remarkable 18th-century Müller Map of Bohemia, and the château often hosts small theatre performances.
The region’s popular recreational area is the Orlík Reservoir. Its deep waters invite boat trips, canoeing or motorboat rides. In summer you can try surfing, wakesurfing, and other water sports. Hikers will love the 24 km route between Kamýk and Orlík, which begins with a steep climb up to the Vrškamýk Castle Ruins, followed by a detour to the iconic Solenice Horseshoe Viewpoint – one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Vltava River.
