Beyond the End of the Prague–Prčice Hike

What awaits you beyond the end of the Prague–Prčice Hike? Essentially, nothing. At least nothing associated with what most people link to this mass tourist event. No crowds. No noise. No stalls selling anything.

When you hear “Prčice,” most people think of the famous Prague–Prčice Hike. In the town square, you’ll find a stone monument in the shape of a boot – the “Prčický škrpál.” If you visit on a weekday, stop by the nearby Tourist Information Center for tips on local trips.

One option is Javorová skála, the highest peak of the Vlašim Highlands, on the border of Central and South Bohemia. You can choose a route that fits your time and energy. The longest and toughest trail starts in Prčice and follows the educational path “From the Rose of Vítkov to the Miraculous Spring,” through meadows and forests to the summit. There are no views at the top, but you’ll enjoy plenty along the way as you steadily climb.

Near the summit, you’ll pass the old Sněžka post office, now offering postal services, refreshments, and information about the Toulava region. From there, follow the “Bees and Ants” trail to Monínec, known for year-round outdoor activities. The yellow trail will lead you back to Sedlec-Prčice. The hike takes about six hours, so plan ahead, especially during the shorter autumn days.

  • Fun fact: This region is often called the “Czech Meran.” Sound familiar? That’s right – it’s named after the Italian town of Merano. The landscape here is so similar that the name was adopted in the late 19th century.

Want to reach the summit of Javorová skála but find the climb too steep? No worries! You can take the reverse route from Sedlec-Prčice along the yellow trail straight to Monínec, where a cable car will take you up. From there, you can continue on the original trail or walk down via the “Bees and Ants” educational path, returning to Prčice the same way.

The shortest option around Sedlec-Prčice is a two-hour stroll along the “From the Rose of Vítkov to the Miraculous Spring” educational trail. Here, you’ll discover the town’s history, local legends, and intriguing details about the noble Vítkovec family, who likely had their seat in the area. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside, especially from the spring near the Ježovka chapel.

  • Tip for you: Pack a snack for your hike, as there aren’t many places to grab refreshments along the way. You can enjoy a meal at the start or end of your journey at the Pivovar Vítek restaurant in Prčice. The next option is at the halfway point at the Monínec restaurant or the M2 restaurant.

If you’re staying in the region for a few days, consider visiting nearby attractions like Vrchotovy Janovice Chateau, once home to Sidonie Nádherná, a muse and patron of many artists. You can also explore the ruins of Zvěřinec Castle or the Kouty fortress. Don’t miss the Vysoký Chlumec open-air museum near Sedlčany for an enriching experience!
