Bike Trips
The extraordinary ruins of Krakovec Castle are not the only experience during a trip to Rakovnicko. Along the way, you can visit the Anderle Gallery or take in the views from Senecká Hora.
The circular route takes about 3.5 hours to ride, but it would be a shame not to get off the bike occasionally. Throughout your journey, you’ll be surrounded by history and art, as well as the stunning nature of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area.
From Rakovník train station, set off along the EV 4 cycling route, GW Berounka-Střela. After about five minutes, you’ll connect to cycling route 8238 near Nový Mlýn, which will lead you to Pavlíkov.
Here, several delightful experiences await you. The first is the Anderle Gallery, located in the square, featuring works by local artist Jiří Anderle—a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, musician, and writer. His art is also displayed in renowned institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. You can enrich your trip by visiting the gallery daily from 12 PM to 6 PM.
As you leave the gallery, be sure to stop by P.J. for some homemade chocolates. A boost of chocolate energy will come in handy as you make your way to the lookout tower on Senecká Mountain. This small detour is definitely worth it; from the tower, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the nearby Křivoklát Highlands and Rakovnicko and beyond.
Just beyond Pavlíkov, you’ll connect to cycling route 0046, which will take you to the charming town of Slabce. Exploring the local English-style park is a lovely way to unwind during your journey.
From there, cycling route 0044 will lead you to the village of Krakovec, where you’ll spot the impressive ruins of Krakovec Castle on the hill ahead.
Visiting the castle ruins is a welcome break, especially before tackling the longer ascent that lies ahead. The stunning views along the way make the effort truly worthwhile. In the nearby village of Šípy, you’ll leave the cycling route and continue along the road until you reach the village of Řeřichy, where you can join cycling route 351, EV4, GW Berounka-Střela, which will take you back to Rakovník.
On your journey, consider stopping in Senomaty to enrich your cultural experience by visiting a beautifully reconstructed 19th-century timber house, a fine example of folk architecture.
If you still have the energy and time, be sure to explore Rakovník. This town was not only a royal city but also a center for soap and ceramics in modern history. As you stroll through the historic center, don’t miss the T.G.M. Museum, which showcases exhibits focused on the local region. The square is highlighted by the late Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew, located near the bell tower and the Prague Gate.
If you’re feeling hungry, stop by Na Střelnici in Rakovník or Hospůdka U Hradu, just a short distance from the Krakovec ruins, for hearty Czech classics. You can also recharge your electric bike at Hospůdka Na návsi in Senomaty.
In Rakovník, check out Bistro U Holiče for its cozy atmosphere, homemade pastries, and great coffee, or enjoy delicious burgers and sandwiches at Ella’s Burger.
