Journey to Okoř: A Moderate Adventure from Prague

You can expect a moderately challenging route from Veleslavín in Prague to the ruins of Okoř Castle, where you will descend more elevation than you ascend.

Hop on your bike and experience the trip to Okoř Castle for yourself. While the lights may have long since faded, your love for the beauty of our homeland may be rekindled. You’ll pass Okoř Castle midway through your journey, but it won’t be the only historical site to admire along the way. The valley of the Zákolanský Stream will lead you to the Přemyslid settlement of Budeč.

This route is perfect for cycling enthusiasts who embrace challenges, with climbs alternating with plenty of descents. Your journey begins at Nádraží Veleslavín in Prague, leading you just a kilometer to the Džbán reservoir, which features a relaxing area in Džbán Park. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the beautiful nature of the Divoká Šárka reserve and pass several renowned restaurants. Fans of Czech cuisine can indulge at U Drahušky in Přední Kopanina or at the guesthouse V Polích on the outskirts of Číčovice.

You can extend your route with a short detour to the family-friendly Zoopark Zájezd, where over a hundred species of exotic and domestic animals await you. You’ll meet a family of lemurs, adorable meerkats, and playful squirrels. The park’s terrariums also feature a variety of reptiles, including the largest publicly accessible collection of chameleons.

The ruins of Okoř Castle mark the halfway point of your journey. The tree-lined path, reminiscent of a song, leads you to this medieval landmark. During your visit, you’ll discover fascinating information and learn about the legendary home of the White Lady of Okoř.

  • Interesting fact: The castle was constructed in the 14th century but suffered considerable damage during the Hussite wars and the Thirty Years’ War, resulting in its abandonment in the 17th century. Today, it graces the landscape as a romantic ruin and serves as a popular venue for cultural events.

History will guide you to your next stop in the valley of the Zákolanský Stream. After a climb, you’ll reach the Přemyslid settlement of Budeč, which has overlooked the landscape since around 800 AD. While exploring this intriguing part of our history, take a moment to relax at the Občerstvení na Budči, where you can enjoy pancakes or homemade pastries to refuel for the final kilometers. Celebrate your accomplishment in Kralupy nad Vltavou, where you can choose to visit the City Museum, cool off at the swimming pool, or quench your thirst at the Na Františku restaurant.
