Sedlčany Region in the saddle: On a bike for views, the history of the Vltava Region

This time you can pedal a little faster, because a more demanding, but all the more exciting cycling trip awaits you along the southern tip of Central Bohemia.

Discover the Sedlčany Region – an area where untouched nature combines with history, tradition and tasty stops. Ready? Here we go!

You start in Sedlčany, where the route leads past the Municipal Museum – by the way, one of the oldest in our country! Here you can admire archaeological finds from times long past, or remember important personalities of Sedlčany, such as Jakub Krčín, Čeněk Habart or violinist Josef Suk.

In the town you can have a quick refreshment before the more demanding part of the route. If you get hungry, we recommend a stop at the Na Růžku Restaurant, where you can calmly park your bike and enjoy a delicious lunch.

From Sedlčany, head south to the open-air museum in Vysoký Chlumec, which offers visitors a pleasant introduction to life in the Vltava Region. Folk architecture, rural household equipment, traditional clothing and tools used in farming – all set in the picturesque surroundings of the Sedlčany landscape. It is definitely worth a visit!

  • Tip for you: And if you get hungry after a cultural experience, stop right next door – at the stylish Židovna Restaurant.

From Vysoký Chlumec, continue through the countryside towards the west, past Svatý Jan to the observation tower in Kamýk nad Vltavou, from where you can enjoy a view of the landscape and see from afar other stops that await you along the way.

Once you get back on your bike, head to Kamýk for Zmrzka u Ádi – the famous Andělská zmrzlina (Angel Ice Cream), one of the most important local delicacies.

  • Interesting fact: The recipe was made famous by Mrs. Anděla Vejražková and the range of flavours is truly diverse – from fruit and vegetable to nutty and herbal.

After a sweet break, a gentle climb awaits you to the ruins of Vrškamýk Castle, once the hunting seat of the kings of Bohemia. Although only the torso remains of the castle today, in the Middle Ages it was an important administrative centre of the Vltava Region. The place still has a strong genius loci and is definitely worth a stop.

Get back on your saddles and head north – to the Muzeum Váchova špejcharu (Vácha Granary Museum). A Gothic fortress originally stood on the site of today’s granary, but it was razed to the ground by Swedish troops in the 17th century. The remains of the fortress were later rebuilt into a Baroque granary. Today, the building belongs to the original Vácha family, who renovated it and established a museum here mapping the life of the inhabitants of the Vltava Region through the centuries.

  • Tip for you:Because there is never enough experience, continue driving along the Brzina River to Dublovice, where a fragrant stop awaits your taste buds – the family run roastery SOuLmate & Mikro Cafe.

From here, it is only a short distance to the ruins of the windmill in Příčovy – a preserved torso of a Dutch-type mill, which was one of the largest not only in Bohemia, but probably in all of Europe. Taking a tour of it is definitely worth it and beautifully paints a picture of the life of the local residents.

At the end of the trip, you will arrive in Příčovy, where you can reward yourself for your day’s exertion with something good at the U Šimků Inn.

The last kilometres of the cycling journey will take you back to Sedlčany, where you started the route. You have covered almost 40 kilometres of landscape that offered views, history, tradition and tastes of the Sedlčany Region in just one day. Well, tell me – do you have it in you?
