The Medieval Trails of Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Take a trip inspired by the world-famous game from Warhorse Studios, exploring key locations and their contrast between medieval times and today's reality.

The story set in the Sázava River region brings to life not only historical landmarks but also entire towns and villages like Sázava, Rataje, and Talmberk. Follow in the footsteps of the main character, Henry, from the world-famous game, and explore how these authentic Kingdom Come: Deliverance locations have transformed over time.

Your journey begins in Rataje nad Sázavou, the heart of the story, where the game’s main character arrives after the tragic events in his hometown of Skalitz. From the moment you step off the train, the landscape will feel familiar—and with good reason. Henry’s first steps followed the same path from the Rataje Mill. As you climb from the Sázava River valley into the town and pass through the stone gate, you’ll be greeted by the sight of Pirkštejn Castle. This Gothic complex, with its palace, defensive walls, and round tower, once served as the residence of Hanuš of Lipá, the local governor. Just a few steps from the castle, you’ll find the town square, home to the Church of St. Matthew and the Rataje nad Sázavou Chateau.

  • Tip for you: While the tournament grounds no longer exist in the castle courtyard, gaming enthusiasts will definitely enjoy the Kingdom Come exhibit, which immerses you in the history of Rataje during the transition from the 14th to the 15th century. If you have a bit of time and don’t mind a short detour, be sure to visit the Rataje lookout point, where you can take in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

As you follow the Sázava River, you’ll arrive at the village of Ledečko, where a gentle ascent through the Posázaví forests awaits. There’s no need to worry; it’s not a steep climb. You can take a break at the gazebo on the hilltop, near the memorial column dedicated to St. Procopius.

Another key historical site in the game’s story is Talmberk Castle. In 1403, the castle belongs to Lord Diviš of Talmberk, who offers Henry a place of refuge. Only the ruins of the castle remain today. The impressive remnants of the round main tower once guarded the eastern entrance during its glory days. As you leave, be sure to look around—you might spot the windmill on the opposite hill or discover other sites where secrets have been revealed.

About halfway through your journey, you’ll follow the forest paths through Mrchojedy back to the Sázava River. From there, you can stroll along the river until you arrive at the town of the same name.

  • Back to the game: Henry arrives in Sázava while searching for a group of counterfeiters producing Prague groschen. At the monastery courtyard, he finds construction on the church in progress, though it will never be completed.

The remnants of the southern nave, with its tower of red Nučice sandstone, are the only evidence of the original Gothic temple plans. The sanctuary was remodeled in the Baroque style in the 18th century, and its entrance was moved to the opposite side, leaving only the windows and towers from the original structure. Today, Sázava is renowned for the Sázava Monastery, the third oldest male monastery in the Czech Republic, linked to St. Prokop, who lived here in the 11th century. You can easily take a train back to Rataje from Sázava. If you’re feeling tired, stop by Sázavská Kozlovna for a bite to eat, just a few meters from the station.
