Open-air Museum in Vysoký Chlumec

The open-air museum near Sedlčany holds precious examples of folk architecture, offering a glimpse into the rural life of bygone times along the Libíňský Creek valley.

The open-air museum in Vysoký Chlumec, a branch of the Mining Museum Příbram, showcases residential, economic, technical, and religious structures, providing valuable examples of rural architecture from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. Interior exhibits offer insights into village living and farming practices.

The region boasts a remarkable collection of folk architecture. To safeguard these treasures from potential loss, they’ve been relocated to the serene surroundings of Vysoký Chlumec. Explore two routes—one self-guided, the other with a guide—for a glimpse into otherwise restricted areas, including a mill, sawmill, and residential buildings.

  • Interesting fact: The open-air museum also houses a water-driven pit saw from the mid-19th century. This machine, equipped with a horizontal cutting frame, was capable of sawing large-diameter logs.

You’ll explore various interiors showcasing black kitchens, painted furniture, and shoemaker workshops. Highlights include a water mill demonstration and exhibits on harnesses and wicker baskets.

  • Tip for you: The Mining Museum in Příbram, in partnership with the town of Vysoký Chlumec, organizes annual cultural events in the open-air museum. Experience traditional Shrovetide, engaging day-long programs such as Crafts Day and Soldiers in the Village, and festive Christmas and Easter activities.
