The Year of Czech Music

In 2024, we celebrate the Year of Czech Music. Did you know that years ending in 4 often mark significant anniversaries for notable Czech composers like Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk Sr., or pivotal moments like the creation of the Czech national anthem? In Central Bohemia, the enchanting number four is tied to these musical giants. Explore the classical music events unfolding in 2024!

Smetana’s Weekend, March 1-3, 2024 – Chateau Mcely | Bedřich Smetana’s final years were spent with his daughter in the charming village of Jabkenice. Inspired by this locale, he composed the “Jabkenický tanec.” During this period, he formed a friendship with the aristocratic Thurn-Taxis family at Mcely and Loučeň estates. Chateau Mcely offers a special accommodation package and an experiential menu crafted by Chef Jan Šterba for visitors.

Celebration of the Year of Czech Music, March 19, 2024 – Škoda Museum | A festive concert harmoniously brings together three Czech music giants – Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, and Josef Suk. This concert is part of the “Year in 4 Seasons” series.

Dvořák Festival, May 1 – September 8, 2024, various places | The 68th edition kicks off on May 1, 2024, at Lány Castle, with Kolín as another Central Bohemian stop. On July 28, experience Trio Coucou at Bartolomějské návrší in Kolín. Fancy an unforgettable experience at Dvořák’s festival on a boat? In August, the steamboat Florentina navigates the waters of Central Bohemia.

  • August 10: Cruise from Kralupy nad Vltavou to Nelahozeves with the enchanting tunes of “The Bartered Bride” opera.
  • August 11: Il Bohemo ship sets sail from Brandýs nad Labem, creating melodic echoes along the way.
  • August 14: Board in the spa town of Poděbrady. The Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra enhances your onboard experience.
  • August 15: Mělník comes alive with the renowned, soulful arias of Rusalka.

Prague Spring – Suk’s Křečovice, May 26, 2024 – St. Luke’s Church, Křečovice | Immerse yourself in a concert featuring masterpieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jan Křtitel Vaňhal, George Frideric Handel, Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček, and Franz Liszt.

Talich’s Beroun, Autumn 2024 – Beroun | Experience the rich heritage of the international music festival, Talich’s Beroun, an ongoing tradition since 1983. The 42nd edition unfolds with captivating concerts in October and November.

The song Where My Home Is (in Czech "Kde domov můj") from which the Czech anthem uses only the first verse, originates from the theatrical play by Josef Kajetán Tyl. The play "Fidlovačka, or No Anger and No Brawl" was first performed in Prague on December 21, 1834.

Sports Enthusiasts, Take Note!

In 2024, exciting sports events await active holiday enthusiasts. Grab your bike for the popular cycling races or dare to tackle the Czech L’etape Tour de France. For those who prefer a spectator’s view, enjoy horse racing in Lysá nad Labem or iconic motor races in the birthplace of the famous Škoda brand. Also, challenge yourself with the traditional march from Prague to Prčice.

Bikemarathon, April 27, 2024 – Beroun | Kicking off the cycling season near Prague, offering brisk tracks with two competitive routes (B, C) and two leisurely routes (TRIP and Family D), suitable for riders aged 10 and above.

Steeplechase, May 1, 2024 – Lysá nad Labem | A traditional all-day horse racing event, filled with entertainment and adrenaline for visitors of all ages. Kids can enjoy a bounce castle and pony races, while older visitors can place bets on their favorites.

Mladá Boleslav Tour, May 11, 2024 – Mladá Boleslav | All cycling routes starting from the Krásná louka area, promising a full-day program for the entire cycling family. The main draw for young riders is the route, including the legendary spiral.

Praha-Prčice March, May 18, 2024 – various locations | The Czech Republic’s most renowned organized hiking event since 1966 offers a special Boot Award for successful participants.

L’etape Tour de France, June 15, 2024 – Strahov Stadium Prague | The longest route of L’etape Tour de France race, covering 142 km with an elevation gain of around 1900 meters, showcases the beauty of Křivoklát forests and the Berounka Valley.

Rock’n’Ride, September 6-7, 2024 – Benešov | It celebrates off-road motorcycles and a spirited sports atmosphere with three motorcycle disciplines: Endurance race Country Cross, SuperEnduro, and Children’s Motocross.

Old Timer Bohemia Rally, September 12-14, 2024 – Mladá Boleslav | An international centennial rally for historic vehicles (FIA and FIVA category), covering approximately 350 km in three days and centered in the automotive hub of Mladá Boleslav.

Medieval Processions

The enduring appeal of historical events, particularly in Central Bohemian towns, is reflected in their regular recurrence year after year for decades. This tradition is likely spurred by the historical ambiance of our royal towns, providing a unique and irreplaceable backdrop to the celebrations. Many of these historical events in Central Bohemia serve as reminders of the region’s important historical milestones and events, though not always free from the echoes of battles fought and blood spilled by warriors.

Battle of Libušín, April 26-28, 2024 – Libušín | The Czech Republic’s largest medieval festival, founded in 1991, marks its 31st edition in 2024. Evolving into a premier European event, it offers period costumes, clashing weapons, bustling markets, and festive medieval ambiance.

Royal Procession – Pilgrimage of Empress Elisabeth, June 1-2, 2024 – various locations | The first weekend of June 2024 will witness the historic procession of Czech Queen and Roman Empress Elisabeth. Accompanied by Duke Stephen II of Bavaria, the journey through Beroun promises a rich program and lively entertainment, inspired by Queen Elisabeth’s documented pilgrimage for the healing of her husband, Charles IV.

Royal Silvering, June 22-23, 2024 – Kutná Hora | This grand celebration transports the city back to the early 15th century. The entire town comes to life over the weekend, offering an immersive experience with period costumes and encounters with historical figures like King Wenceslas IV and his consort.

Beroun is renowned for its ceramics. Local potters, celebrated for their skill in the Middle Ages, carry on this storied tradition. Since 1997, the city hosts regular autumn pottery markets on Husovo Square. Due to popularity, spring markets were added, this year on May 11-12 and June 8-9. The autumn markets are set for September 7-8. Enthusiasts of ceramics shouldn't miss these cherished events.

Autumn Embraced by Grape Harvest Festivities

Central Bohemia’s diversity extends beyond its brewery dominance, embracing vine cultivation. In Mělník, Karlštejn, and Kutná Hora, yearly grape harvest festivals connect to the region’s royal past. These vineyards, a legacy of Czech kings led by Charles IV, debunk any notion of a modern trend.

Vintage at Kačina Château, September 2024 | Savor global wines, fresh grapes, and grape juice. Explore agricultural tech exhibits, witness a field robot, and compete in identifying grape varieties. Craft markets and musical-cultural experiences abound. The Empire-style Château welcomes guided tours.

Mělník Vintage, September 20-22, 2024 | Mělník, a viticulture pioneer, hosts the country’s oldest and grandest grape harvest festival. The 85th edition promises three days of live music, street theater, history, and gastronomic delights.

Karlštejn Grape Harvest, September 2024 | Immerse in traditional grape harvesting amid medieval vibes. Karlštejn Castle’s courtyard transforms into a royal tavern. Charles IV addresses the crowd, trumpet players sound a festive fanfare, and a knight’s tournament unfolds. Anticipate white and red wines, medieval tunes, torchlight processions, and fire performances.
