St. James Viewpoint, Kutná Hora
You know, there are places where you simply can’t resist taking out your camera, even if you’ve visited them a hundred times before. The viewpoint at St. James in Kutná Hora is one of those special spots! From here, the entire historical town of Kutná Hora unfolds in the palm of your hand: St. Barbara Church, along with the former Jesuit College, is right in front of you, surrounded by picturesque vineyards.
Santini Immortalis
The iconic spiraling staircase in Central Bohemia is a must-capture view, designed by the genius Giovanni Santini-Aichel, who has been gone for over 300 years. It’s part of the timeless designs at the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist in Sedlec – Kutná Hora. For a unique experience, choose night tours with a guide in monk or nun attire. Explore the candlelit ossuary, the cathedral, and enjoy an organ concert.
Our Own Horseshoe Bend
No marked path, but the climb is worthwhile. The view captures one of the beautiful Vltava meanders, known as Solenická podkova, situated on the rocks of Vrané near Solenice. These rocks rise 150 meters above the river. Does the height or beauty leave you feeling a bit dizzy? How many enthusiastic tourists must have relished the view of the Solenice horseshoe from here? Countless – and it’s no surprise! Will you be one of them?
Live For The Thrill: The Devil’s Heads
As you hike through the forest above Želízy village in Kokořínsko, be prepared for a rather unsettling sight. Two enormous demonic faces, intricately carved by Václav Levý in the mid-1800s from a stone, peer back at you with vacant eyes. Locally named Čertovy hlavy or The Devil Heads, these nearly 30-foot-tall stone sculptures have fascinated and unnerved generations of locals. Alongside these eerie faces, you’ll discover other carvings by the artist, depicting scenes from fairy tales, on nearby rock faces. Despite the subtle effects of time and weather, the faces continue to evoke a sense of unease.
Heather Blossoms and Serenity
Did we find ourselves on the Scottish moorlands? Don’t let your eyes misguide you! This expanse unfurls in Brdy and Podbrdsko. Enjoy the heather blossom in the former military impact zone that is only 60 km (37 miles) southwest from Prague. As an extra perk, enjoy complete radio silence and zero cell reception, allowing you to fully recharge amidst the tranquility of nature.
Sakura Trees? That’s a Cherry Blossom!
Discover the captivating allure of cherry blossoms in Central Bohemia’s exclusive spa town. Experience the mesmerizing sight of pink and white flowers adorning the spa colonnade and parallel boulevards at their peak bloom. There’s no need to travel to Japan; Poděbrady provides an equally delightful spectacle right here.
Along the Railways
The Žampach railway viaduct, towering and picturesque, stands as the highest and most beautiful. Surrounded by vibrant broad-leaved forests, ablaze with fall colors, it’s a striking feature. A highlight of the beloved Posázavský Pacifik train line, it winds through the scenic stretches along the Sázava river, reminiscent of a romanticized Wild West (not only) for the locals.
Industrial Treat for Technical Lovers
Though the last miner left the mine more than 25 years ago, you’ll feel like they just stepped out a moment ago. Explore the Mining Museum Mayrau in Vinařice near Kladno with a former mine guide as your companion, sharing insights into their daily work.
